What separating families in Bristol and the South West need to know about mediation and the court process.
If you can reach agreements in mediation, you avoid contested court proceedings altogether — saving months of delay, significant legal costs, and a great deal of stress for everyone involved, especially your children.
Before applying to the family court for a child arrangements order (Form C100) or a financial order (Form A), you must first attend a MIAM — unless an exemption applies. Your mediator signs the certificate the court requires. MIAM certificates we issue are valid at every family court in England and Wales, including your local family court.
An agreement reached in mediation can be drawn up as a Memorandum of Understanding and converted into a consent order by your solicitor — giving it the same legal force as a court order, usually without either of you attending a hearing.
The same professional service — without the journey into the city centre.
Join your session from home — whether you're in Clifton, Bedminster, Bath or anywhere across the South West. No drive into the city centre, no parking costs, no time off work. Evening appointments make it easy to fit around family life.
Online mediation carries exactly the same legal weight as in-person mediation. Your MIAM certificate and Memorandum of Understanding are accepted by every family court in England and Wales.
Online cases involving child arrangements are fully eligible for the government's £500 Family Mediation Voucher Scheme. We apply for this on your behalf after your MIAM — there is no separate application for you to complete.
Most families reach an agreement in 3-5 sessions. Here is what to expect.
A confidential chat to understand your situation and explain how mediation works. No obligation.
A private assessment meeting for each person. Required before court. We discuss your concerns and whether mediation is right for you.
Work together with the mediator to find solutions. Sessions are 90 minutes each. Most families need 3-5 sessions.
We document your agreement in a Memorandum of Understanding. Your solicitor can make this legally binding if needed.

No. Mediation takes place entirely outside the court system. If you do need a court order, applications are submitted online, and the court will let you know whether any hearing can be held by video call.
Yes — this is one of the main reasons couples choose online mediation. Each of you joins from your own home, which removes travel and makes scheduling far easier. Shuttle mediation is also available if you prefer not to be on screen together.
Eligibility for Legal Aid is based on your financial circumstances, not your postcode. If you receive benefits such as Universal Credit, or have a low income, your MIAM and mediation sessions may be covered. Ask us to check your eligibility — it takes only a few minutes.
